My trip to Vietnam was one of my favourites. I went with very little expectation. We started my tip In Hanoi travelling down the country ending my journey in Ho Chi Mihn City. I decided to write this list to show you the top 10 things to do (from my experiences)...
1. Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. We took a 2-day boat ride which included kayaking and stopping off at remote beaches. The views are breathtaking, and you will be in awe of the beautiful scenery. The emerald waters are surrounding limestone island topped with rainforests. The boat trips are not cheap (for Vietnamese prices) but are well worth the money, I wish we spent longer there.
2. Hanoi Train Street
The Hanoi train street is a bizarre but wonderful sight. It's not often you get to walk down a train track especially one that is surrounded by shops and cafes. Some places won't let you walk past and take photos without purchasing something. This attraction is well worth the visit and you might even get a chance to see the train pass by.
3. Lady Buddha
The Lady Buddha statue is located on Son Tra Mountain in Da Nang. The mountain has many attractions such as temples, views and monkeys. The statue is the largest in Vietnam standing at 67m. The views from the peninsula are wonderful. If you're into your culture there are statues, temples and pagodas. The Chessboard is the highest peak of the mountain.
4. Thuy Tien lake Abandoned Water Park
This abandon waterpark is something remarkable. The park is dried up but still has all the buildings which are covered in graffiti. This gives the area an aery and urban vibe. The waterpark is not open to the public and has guards who stop trespassers. If you're wondering how to get in.... bring enough money and don’t take no for an answer, they will eventually take your money and let you in.
5. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park
The national park is situated in North-Centre Vietnam. The national is so beautiful to look at. A true natural beauty. The place is full of mountains with tropical forests. Underground rivers run through the park which makes the area known for its limestone caves. The best thing we did here was hire a motorbike and ride around taking in the incredibly beautiful scenery.
6. Crazy House
The Crazy House is in Dalat. Yes, the house is utterly crazy. The building is known for its strange architecture. Each room with a different theme which is hard to understand due to its random interior. Crazy House if one of those places that is so hard to describe due to its uniqueness.
7. Hao Lo Prison
The prison in Hanoi was a big part of the history of Vietnam. Vietnam is full of amazing museums and historical places. This made it on the list due to how It made me feel visiting. The prison has life size mannequins throughout which paints a shocking picture of life in the prisons. There is a small fee for entering but it is well worth the money.
8. Paradise Cave
The cave is one of Phong Kha-Ke Bang’s best attractions. There is a wooden walkway that goes deep into the cave. The limestone interior provides amazing textures and great colours. The cave extends to 31km, but the walk is only 1km. The wooden walkway provided amazing views throughout the walk and fully immerses you in its greatness.
9. Bike Tour
There are loads of bike tours in Vietnam. Make sure you do your research, so you find a reputable one. Many offer different routes so choose one that’s suitable to you. We decided to do a 3-day biking tour through rural Vietnam. This gave us an incredible insight to Vietnam through the lens of a local. We visited jungles, waterfalls, historic landmarks and remote villages. This opened my eyes to the effects of the war on the country. It was a great opportunity to reflect on my own life and what's not fun about riding a motorbike for 3 days with unbelievable views.
10. Imperial City
The Imperial City in a walled enclosure within the citadel in Hue. This UNESCO world heritage site is rich with Vietnamese history. The grounds are free to roam with the opportunity to enter the temples. If you're into your history and culture this is a must see.
